What are the 3 Types of Scaffolds?
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), there are three (3) types of scaffolds divided by usage, they are:
- Suspended
- Supported
- Aerial
Suspended scaffolds are scaffolds that hang and are hanging from above via ropes, wires, or any type of support. Supported scaffolds, on the other hand, are those that have the necessary support from the deck, ground, or barge.
Lastly, aerial lifts are those that are used in the shipyard industry because of the operational conditions (being on top of the water). Some also use scissor lifts because of its ability to be adjustable and retractable by height.
NOTE: These aren’t the only classifications and kinds of scaffolding. Some categorize scaffolding structures according to the materials used or the heights achievable.
What is Shipyard Scaffolding?
Shipyard scaffolding is a type of scaffolding device or system that companies and organizations use to create an elevated surface for work and operations. Without it, workers wouldn’t be able to work on higher areas that regular ladders can’t reach.
From the term alone, shipyard scaffolding is often used in areas and vicinities of shipyards. Here’s a video to help you understand shipyard scaffolding even better.

What is a Scaffolding on a Ship?
Scaffolding on a ship is shipyard scaffolding, a system used in order to provide an elevation for projects. You’ll usually find them in shipyards, the place where ships dock or are parked for building, maintaining, or repairing.
The designs and overall structure of shipyard scaffolds vary, not having a single type of design. Furthermore, the staging procedure must be enough for the activities and tasks at hand in terms of height, weight, and overall sturdiness.
What is OSHA Scaffolding?
OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, is a US regulatory agency tasked to look over, examine, and provision rules in workplaces. So, OSHA scaffolding is not a type of scaffolding, but the set of rules that the agency put in place for businesses and companies to follow.
The scaffolding part of OSHA’s standards include:
- The scaffolding standard that companies and organizations need to follow
- Construction, repairing, and maintaining instructions and relate information
- Hazards, risks, and solutions for scaffolding in workplaces
So, don’t be confused when you encounter OSHA scaffolding, because it is not a scaffolding category!
What are the Parts of a Shipyard Scaffold?
Since shipyard scaffolding systems and structures are often used to elevate and heighten workplaces, its parts and components must often be pointing toward it. The parts and components of shipyard scaffolds often include, but are not limited to:
- Ledgers
- The horizontal beams that support and stabilize the entire scaffold.
- Standards
- They’re the vertical beams that form the primary framework, providing structure and height for the scaffold.
- Transoms
- The supplemental component that enhances and develops the structure’s weight capacity.
- Base Plates
- The foundation of the scaffold. Without it, all other components wouldn’t stand.
- Diagonal Braces
- Braces that provide additional/extra support to the scaffold.
- Guardrails
- The rails that are clamped onto the standards for maximum safety and security. Prevents falling off of the scaffold.
- Working Platform
- The area within the scaffolding structure that gives space to workers and materials.
- Access Ladder or Staircase
- The component that allows workers to go up the scaffolding structure.

NOTE: The parts and components of a shipyard scaffold aren’t just limited to this. These are just the general components that make up shipyard scaffolds and are the required ones.

What is Shoring Scaffolding?
In the simplest and easiest terms possible, shoring scaffolding is a framework structure that’s meant to support or push loads up. It does this to keep them steady and stable while crews and workers operate on them, securing them in place.
Shoring scaffolds are often utilized when the load being carried and worked on is aligned and directly overhead.

What is the Goal of Shipyard Scaffolding?
Overall, the goal of scaffolding is to elevate working positions. They’re used as a platform to reach farther areas that are unreachable through standard ladders and staircases. What they do is provide elevated surfaces for construction, repairs, renovation, even maintenance.
